This double bill concert features two regional indie/folk/pop bands with Fredonia connections!
Blending elements of traditional folk music, indie rock, and power pop, That One Crocodile is the home base of singer/songwriter Ben Baker. Active in the region for many years across multiple projects, Baker returned to the stage in 2022 to celebrate his newest solo collection, the country-inflected MANY STATES, available now to stream on all platforms and on cassette via Little Pigeon Tapes. An eclectic yet cohesive mix of songs featuring multiple vocalists, a horn section, pedal steel guitar, and several characters inhabiting a loose narrative, the record celebrates resilience, rebirth, and self-discovery.
A Fredonia native, Baker currently engineers and produces music from his Canadaway Records studio in Rochester’s historic 19th Ward. A homecoming in several ways, this concert will feature an ensemble of local collaborators and the Opera House’s 1918 Steinway grand piano – the very same instrument heard across MANY STATES, recorded on the venue’s stage before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tough Old Bird was formed by songwriting brothers Matthew and Nathan Corrigan in rural Western New York. Matt is a SUNY Fredonia graduate! Since releasing ‘Gambling Days’ in 2016, the duo has taken its singular style of modern folk music to coffee shops, listening rooms, music clubs, dive bars, campgrounds and front porches across the United States. Their most recent full-length LP, The Old Great Lakes, found the band expanding their horizons beyond traditional folk music to encompass the battered shoreline of the Rust Belt and the inner lives of those who call it home.
In 2021, Tough Old Bird released a new EP, A Mantle for the Lantern. Recorded at home in isolation during the previous year, Tough Old Bird’s latest music merges new and old sounds while exploring themes of memory, isolation and loss; all with a hopeful eye toward the future.
